Summer learning

The Summer Slide Is Real (And Here's What To Do About It)

A low-pressure guide to gently rebuilding momentum in the final weeks of the holidays, without turning what's left of summer into more school.

Six weeks in, and the timetable is a distant memory. No bell, no homework, no reason to open a book unless it is for fun. Then, somewhere around now, a small thought creeps in: September is not that far away, and it has been a long time since your child did anything that looked like schoolwork.

If that thought has crossed your mind, you are not alone, and it does not mean the summer has gone wrong. Here is what is actually happening, and what genuinely helps in the weeks that are left.

What actually happens over a long summer

This is not just a parenting myth. Research into summer learning loss consistently shows that skills can slip over a long break from school, and maths and spelling are usually the first to go, regardless of how able a child normally is. It happens across the board, not just to children who were already struggling.

The good news is that this kind of rust shakes off quickly once term starts and a normal routine returns. The value of doing something now is not about damage control. It is about making the first week of September feel like a normal Tuesday, rather than a shock to the system.

Why this does not need to be a panic

You do not need to recreate a school term in the final weeks of August. A few short, low-pressure sessions will do far more than one long, dreaded catch-up day, and they are much easier to actually stick to.

What actually helps

What this looks like at BrightBerry

At BrightBerry, we usually find that one hour a week in the final stretch of summer is enough to make a genuine difference, without eating into the rest of the holiday. It is enough to knock the rust off, rebuild a little confidence, and mean your child walks into September feeling ready rather than rusty.
